Protecting asplenic individuals from fulminant pneumococcal disease.
In this issue of Eurosurveillance, Chironna et al. report on an unfortunate death of an asplenic individual with fulminant pneumococcal sepsis [1]. Whether or not the death of this particular individual could have been avoided with active preventive interventions remains unanswered. It does, however, raise the alert to revisit the preventive guidelines of asplenic patients in general, and need ...
متن کاملFatal purpura fulminans and Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome from fulminant Streptococcus pneumoniae sepsis in an asplenic young adult
Asplenic patients are at increased risk for sepsis and fulminant infection. Sepsis in these patients is typically secondary to encapsulated bacteria, with Streptococcus pneumoniae being the most frequent pathogen. Rare complications of severe sepsis include purpura fulminans and bilateral adrenal hemorrhage (Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome). We present the case of a 36-year-old woman, healthy ...

It can also be the cause of overwhelming postsplenectomy infection (OPSI). CASE PRESENTATION We report a case of OPSI in a 41-year-old woman with hypersplenism associated with hepatitis B cirrhosis. We detected a significant Mycoplasma ...

This study was conducted to compare the antibody response to 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine and 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine in patients with thalassemia major. Methods: A randomized cross-over clinical trial was performed on 50 asplenic patients with t...
